Bruins Cali Road Trip Part 3: Bruins Finally Beat the Ducks

Marty Turco makes a nice save against the Ducks (3/25/12)

The Bruins' Marty Turco (with his bright yellow pads) makes a nice save against the Ducks.

3/25/12: Bruins at Ducks - Final Score (3-2 Bruins)

The Bruins finish off their California road trip with a win in Anaheim, taking two of the three games on the trip and four of their last five games.  They definitely seem to be back on track, putting in quality effort and playing like the Bruins we love.  It was also great to see Marty Turco play a good game and make some big saves.  They finally started him and gave Tim Thomas a rest.. it was about time!  Another thing, which should make all Bruins fans excited, was the return of Rich Peverley!  Yessss.. he’s finally back from his sprained MCL and seemed to be moving well.  The only thing he can’t do yet is quick, sharp turns.  Unfortunately, those quick moves are kind of his thing, but he still made a positive impact.

So, we seem to have gotten our game back and it looks like we’re ready for the playoffs.  We can all breathe a little easier because of this, but also for a couple of other reasons.  First, Turco showed that he is reliable and in fact still quite good, so coach Claude Julien can feel a bit safer playing him and giving Thomas a rest.  Second, Peverley is back.. don’t really need much explanation there.. just look at any video of him since he joined the Bruins last year (especially the stuff he did in the Stanley Cup Finals) and you’ll see why he is such a huge asset to the team.  Lastly, having won two of the three games in what I’ll call the “California series,” we proved once again that the East Coast is better than the West Coast!  Though, last year’s Stanley Cup Finals proved that too.

Alright, I’m way to excited about having Rich Peverley back, so here’s some videos of him:
* His first goal as a Bruin:
* Some great work leading to a shorthanded goal:
* Some good moves and a nice goal:
* The first goal of the Stanley Cup Finals Game 4:

Zdeno Chara dives and knocks the puck away from Ryan Getzlaf on the rush (3/25/12)

The Bruins' Zdeno Chara, with a huge effort, dives and knocks the puck away from Ryan Getzlaf on the rush.

Here’s my notes from the game with the plays I felt were worth highlighting and ranting about, along with some videos…

1st Period
-In the first minute, Marty Turco makes a save and we do some good offensive work.
-In the next minutes, we get some good chances, then Brian Rolston with a nice neutral zone steal gets tripped and we go on the power play.
-On the power play:
–We do some good work early on, then we can’t get established in their end and they kill off the penalty.  Turco’s been showing off his great puck work and decisions.
-Almost nine minutes in, Johnny Boychuk with a bomb that one of the Ducks blocked and was hurt by.
-A minute later, Greg Zanon with a big hit in our end.
-13 minutes in, Benoit Pouliot with a great steal then shot.
-A minute later, Andrew Ference gets a tripping penalty.
-On the penalty kill:
–some good defense, then Turco with a nice save.
–Almost halfway through Turco makes a crazy save.
–We kill the penalty off.
-Then we get a good offensive stand with some good chances.
-Then some more good work and great effort by Jordan Caron.
-With 35 seconds left, Turco makes a great kick save.
-The period ends tied 0-0.
-The Bruins are 14-8-2 when tied after the first period this season.
-We won 14 of the 18 face-offs in the period.

2nd Period
-In the first minute, we get a couple of good chances.
-Then some more good chances and great work by Shawn Thornton to drive to the net past some defenders and get a shot off.
-Almost five minute in, the Bruins with some good forechecking, they get the puck to Zdeno Chara at the blue line.. he scores his 12th goal of the season!
-Six minutes in, Chris Kelly rushing in fakes a shot, passes to Pouliot then screens for him.. Pouliot scores his 13th goal of the season!
-Nine minutes in, Turco makes a great point-blank save, then Rolston gets a stick in the face, but the Ducks get a power play.. Seconds into it, Teemu Selanne deflects a shot and he scores his 24th goal of the season.
-Then we block some shots and Turco makes some nice saves.
-Just over 15 minutes in, some good work and a great chance for Caron off of a rebound from Gregory Campbell’s shot but he couldn’t control it.
-Then more good work, especially by Rich Peverley.
-18 minutes in, nice kick save by Turco on Selanne.. then another nice save soon after.
-Then they get a 2-on-1 rush and Chara puts in an amazing effort to skate all the way down the ice and put on great back pressure, steal the puck and clear it.
-The period ends 2-1 Bruins.
-Bruins are 28-0-0 when leading after two periods this season.

3rd Period
-In the first minute, the Ducks’ goalie, Jonas Hiller, makes a long pass ahead that goes all the way to Turco, who then passes it ahead nicely.
-Then Ference blocks a shot and hurts his left leg.
-Luca Sbisa hits Thornton as he was pursuing the puck and gets an interference penalty.
-On the power play:
–We do some good work then a nice shot by Dennis Seidenberg tipped by Patrice Bergeron.. the puck sticks in the side of the net.
–Then they almost get short-handed breakaway but Chara dives to knock the puck away.
–Then we get an offensive stand and Boychuk has a nice shot.
–Then we do some good work to keep the puck in the offensive zone.. the power play ends.
-Sic minutes in, Caron with some great work to force the puck into the offensive zone then put a nice hit on of them to get the puck to Thornton to Campbell for a nice shot.
-A minute later, Turco makes a bunch of great saves all real quick, then they score on a screened shot.  They end up taking away the goal because one of the Ducks was right on Turco in the crease, which didn’t give him the required space to make a save.. it was a close call, but legitimate.  A player, either by contact or position cannot impair the goalie’s ability to freely play the puck.  The rule also says no player can make contact with the goalie at all inside the crease.. and he definitely did do that.  The crowd is pissed, but the Ducks’ coach looks like he’s about to burst into flames.  He grabs a water bottle and almost throws it. but constrains himself.
-Just over eight minute in, we have a good shift.. Marchand and Bergeron get a 2-on-1 rush and Marchand hits post in the top corner.
-The Ducks’ coach is still yelling at the refs, risking a penalty.
-Then Chara breaks his team-high 14th stick of the year on a long shot.
-Almost 11 minutes in, the Ducks make a stand in our end, then Pouliot breaks away in a 1-on-1, but the guy takes him out.. pretty close to a penalty.
-Then we make a good offensive stand and get some good chances.
-About 13 minutes in, Pouliot takes a huge hit (that was high and could’ve been a penalty) to move the puck ahead.. then we get a 2-on-1.. Kelly to Rolston.. scores his 7th goal of the season.
-On the penalty kill:
–We do some good work to keep them from getting any shots.. including good work by Peverley.
–Then with about 20 seconds left, the Ducks finally get a good chance and Turco makes two huge saves in a row.
–As it ends, Bergeron with great work to force the puck all the way to their end, then steal it and throw it in front of the goal for Brad Marchand, who gets a good chance.
-With under three minutes left, Turco makes a bunch of great saves in a row again, but then they score high glove side.
-Then the Ducks get some good chances as the Bruins look tired defensively.
-At one point, shots on goal were 25-16 in the Bruins’ favor, now it’s 25-25.
-Then with 90 seconds left, the ducks pull Hiller for an extra attacker..
-Then big save Turco followed by David Krejci diving to knock the puck out of the zone.
-With a minute left, Bergeron with a mice steal to prevent a rush then take some time off of the clock.
-With 30 seconds left, they pull him again and get in our end, we do some good defensive work, Turco makes some more nice saves.
-It comes down to a face-off with 5.2 seconds left.. Chara gets the loose puck and bleeds the clock..  The Bruins win 3-2.

Final Thoughts / Notes
-Rich Peverley finally came back from his sprained MCL and participated in this game.
-Before this game, the Bruins hadn’t beaten the Ducks in over 3 years.. I was baffled to hear that.. we must always play them when we’re in a slump.  The last time we beat them was February 6, 2009.. and the last time we beat them in Anaheim was October 19, 2003!
-We’ve won 2 of the 3 games on the road trip, and 4 of our last 5.  This is our best streak since November/December.
-Face-offs wins were 39-28 in favor of the Bruins.
-The Chris Kelly line was huge in this game with lots of great work and scoring chances.
-Brian Rolston’s been playing really well..  This was his 157th career 2-point game..  He currently has a 6 game point streak with 3 goals, 8 assists and a +/- rating of +8!  Hopefully he’ll end up being like Peverley and Kelly were for us last year: a great addition to the team who fits in well.. he’s pretty much already done it.
-Marty Turco got the start.. he has better career stats against the Ducks than Thomas.  The Ducks’ goalie, Jonas Hiller, has great stats against us in his career.  This was Turco’s first NHL win in 408 days (since February 1, 2011).  He made 25 saves.
-This may be Turco’s last game with the Bruins as our top minor league goalie, Anton Khudobin, is now back from his wrist injury.. so we should probably bring him up to get him some NHL play time before the playoffs, which Tuukka Rask may not be available for.
-I knew Chara was tall, but the announcers threw a stat out that I never knew.. he is the tallest player in league history at 6’9”.
