David Krejci Lofts the Bruins to Victory with a Hat-trick

David Krejci scores a goal against Martin Brodeur (3/1/12)

The Bruins' David Krejci scores his first of three goals in this game against the Devils' goalie Martin Brodeur.

3/1/12: Bruins vs Devils - Final Score (4-3 Bruins in OT)

Last night the Bruins took on the New Jersey Devils here in Boston.  It was a great game, both in the sense that the Bruins further got their game back, and that it was up and down, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.  The Bruins owned the first period, scoring two unanswered goals, but were sloppy in the second, allowing the Devils to score three unanswered goals.  In the third period, though, they came back hard and got a lot of quality scoring chances.. and David Krejci managed to hit the puck in mid-air and score to tie the game.. that play probably not being one that you would call a quality scoring chance since the puck was bouncing all over the place.. but it certainly was amazing.. and it was just one example of how Krejci and the Bruins are making a comeback.

1st Period
-Just over one minute into the game, Tyler Seguin rushed up the side, passed to David Krejci in front of the net.. goal!  This was so great to see, not only because we started the game so strong after we’ve been struggling recently, but because Seguin and Krejci both went into this game on a cold streak.  Seguin had something like a 10 game goal drought and Krejci only had 2 goals and no assists in the last 14 games!
-A minute later, Eric Boulton wanted to rile up the Devils, so he asked Shawn Thornton to fight.. and Thornton never backs down.. so they fought and it was a very long fight!  Boulton got more small hits in, but Thornton had some nice big haymakers!
-Seguin and Krejci continued to get some great scoring chances..  Almost five minutes in, Krejci passed to Seguin for a one timer.. very close.
-A minute later, we almost had another goal as the puck got past Devils goalie Martin Brodeur.. but he quickly dove to the ground to stop it.
-A little over a minute later, Bruins goalie Tim Thomas makes a big save that looked like it changed direction.. good reflexes.
-Then eight minutes in, Thomas makes a save and passes ahead to Milan Lucic, who made a great effort to fight through a check then pass to Seguin.. he scores!  And Thomas gets an assist on this too!
-Halfway through the first period, new Bruin Brian Rolston gets a penalty for tripping.
-The Bruins did an amazing job killing the Devils’ power play.. and towards the end of it, Krejci gets a breakaway, dekes, backhand shot.. Brodeur makes huge save!
-After that, Thomas had a couple huge saves.
-16 mins in, one of the new Bruins, Greg Zanon, puts a big hit on one of the Devils.. Boston fans cheer loudly to this as they accept him to the hard-hitting Bruins.
-A little over a minute later, Adam McQuaid gave a nice big hit.
-Then right after, the Devils’ Ryan Carter got roughing penalty for punching Krejci (away from play and puck).
-We end the period with two unanswered goals.

2nd Period
-About six minutes in, Thomas makes a big save.
-Soon after, Joe Corvo makes a bad pass that is stolen by Ilya Kovalchuk, who then passes to Zach Parise.. goal.  We were much stronger in the neutral zone in the first period.
-Soon after, Bruins captain Zdeno Chara put a nice big hit on Petr Sykora.
-About eight minutes in, Alexei Ponikarovsky put a big hit on Andrew Ference that would take him out of the game with a “lower-body injury.”
-Until about nine minute in, the Bruins had no shots on goal, but then came in spurts.
-11 minutes in, we had another flurry of close shots.. some hit post.. then we did it again a minute later.
-14 minutes in, Thomas makes a bunch of big saves all real quick, but then the Devils’ Patrik Elias scores.
-18 minutes in, The Devils’ David Clarkson somehow finds a hole between Thomas and the post even though Thomas was pressed up against it.. he scores.
-With under 2 mins left, Chara gets a penalty for holding Parise.. but wtf?.. watch the replay!.. Parise held Chara’s arm so he couldn’t get away!  We went on to kill that power play too.
-The Devils end the period with three unanswered goals.

3rd Period
-Just over four minutes in, Thomas makes yet another big save.
-Soon after, the Bruins have the puck in the Devils’ zone.. the puck bounces all over.. Krejci somehow hits it in mid-air with the shaft of his stick and scores!.. This goal was all due to the sticktoitiveness of this line.  The play was sloppy as hell, but they kept it alive and made it work!
-A bit later, Sykora gets a delay of game penalty for tossing the puck out of the rink without hitting any glass on the way.
-On our resulting power play, Lucic almost scores but Brodeur makes a big save.
-About nine minutes in, Thomas makes another big save.
-Soon after, Chara gets a penalty for high-sticking on Adam Henrique.. it was accident though.. Chara was trying to lift his stick up and over Henrique and hit his face.
-While killing the Devils’ power play, the Bruins get a shorthanded 2-on-1 with Patrice Bergeron and Chris Kelly.. Kelly hits post!
-A bit later, we give a couple big hits.
-Then Kovalchuk, one of the recipients of the big hits, wants payback.. he goes flying back-first into Brad Marchand against the boards.. he spins off Marchand and hits him in head.. so he gets a penalty.
-On the resulting power play, we had some close scoring chances.
-With just over a min left, we were still fighting hard and Lucic had some great stick work to keep the puck in the zone.

Overtime
-We start off the overtime on a good note with Bergeron winning the face-off.. as he is so great at doing.
-Two minutes in, Thomas makes a nice stop.. then another one right after the resulting face-off.
-Less than a minute later, Krejci does a great job to keep the puck in the offensive zone.. then the rest of the line puts in that same quality effort.. Bergeron behind their net passes to Chara right in front.. he almost scores.. Krejci gets the rebound, knew he had to loft it since Brodeur was laying on his hip.. he does.. you know it!!  Krejci gets a hat-trick!!!!  WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Final Thoughts
-Bruins are now 29-0-0 when leading by two goals
-Bruins coach Claude Julien did the right thing to help us out of our slump and mixed some things up.. He put Seguin on the first line.. with Krejci.. and Lucic.. and it worked really well.. Seguin will prob stay on the first line.
-It was great to see Seguin and Krejci both ending their cold streaks.. and Krejci with a hat-trick to really end it.
-Something nice to see was the Bruins getting physical again.. we really should’ve seen it against Ottawa.. but at least we have our true Bruins hockey back now!
-Unfortunately, Joe Corvo seems to have become the new Tomas Kaberle.. in other words, not living up to expectations and making dumb mistakes leading to turnovers.
-It seems like players are starting to get worn down.. I totally buy into the talk that shortening the season would be better.. like 60 games or something (instead of 82).
-They were saying this looked like it could be a preview of the first round of playoffs.. the way this game went, I wouldn’t be surprised if that did happen.. but if it did, I can also totally see it playing out how this game did.  We shall see, but I wouldn’t mind beating them in the first round of playoffs.. with an epic game 7 overtime win.
