So a couple of weeks ago Brad Marchand got suspended for 5 friggin games for what has been argued as defending himself (video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGD5DbljtfE).. The Canucks’ Sami Salo, who is much bigger than Marchand, was coming at him and would’ve crushed Marchand.. So he bends down and Salo flips over him. At first I thought he was just faking injury, so I was going to be pissed about that, but he did get a concussion. However, a side note on faking injuries or penalties: players who do that, like pretty much anyone playing for Montreal, should really just go do what they’re actually good at: diving and acting. So I can’t be mad that he faked it because I didn’t. However, I can be mad about this: the lamest thing about this suspension is that Marchand asked NHL’s head disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan himself if bending down like this to avoid being hurt would be ok to do.. He was told it was fine to protect himself in that way. Inconsistency there..
What’s more, about a week ago, the Predators’ Ryan Ellis did the SAME THING to the Flyers’ Wayne Simmonds (video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Km9I73WKhiY or in HD here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekUCzIMY9oM).. While I’m always happy to see Flyers getting destroyed, my point here is that Ellis got NO DISCIPLINE whatsoever, not even a minor penalty. So why did Marchand get one. Maybe it’s because Simmonds didn’t get hurt.. but if so that’s still unfair. The penalty called “clipping” exists for when someone does this move.. so it shouldn’t matter if the victim got hurt or not. That’s like letting a player get away with a clear, intended elbow to the head just because the victim didn’t get a concussion. Maybe it plays into my conspiracy theory that the powers that be in the NHL don’t like the Bruins winning. I don’t know.. What I do know is that the NHL needs to be consistent with their discipline!
